Weekend Recap: Family Fun Edition

I think I should just plan on Weekend Recaps being on Wednesday!!

This past weekend was SO good!  Andy, Michelle & Carmen came up Saturday from NC.  We went down there a month ago (still need to get that trip posted) and we were very excited to see them again.  Carmen is 6 months older than Colin and they play so good together.

Saturday morning we got up and went to the local Farmer's Market and stopped by Kroger for cookout supplies then got home and got the carport set up for a day of fun!  They stopped and picked Justin's mom up on the way to our house.  The kids were so excited to play.  We stayed on the carport for most of the day.  Andy & Justin did the grilling and the food was really good!  I found hot dogs that were Colin safe (more on food allergies hopefully coming this week!) and he really liked it.

Carmen took the car for a ride...or swing!

After all of that playing it was getting hot so they put on Colin's hats and took a water break!

Those red cheeks!

Our little cuties!

On Sunday we did a few things and then Colin stayed with my parents while we went out to celebrate our 3rd anniversary....lunch at Chipotle!

So thankful for this guy!  I can't imagine life without him!

Another great weekend in the books!!!

Weekend Recap

I was doing so good with the blog and then....nothing.  Here I am to try again!

And here I am on Tuesday trying again - I got one sentence done yesterday and that was it so I thought I'd give it another try!

We had a really good weekend!  Justin started painting the kitchen/dining room on Thursday & Friday.  It's very much a work in progress and I will post pictures when we get it done :)

Saturday morning we went to a few yard sales but didn't find anything.  We went to Wagons and Wheels in Blacksburg and I think Colin enjoyed seeing the trucks and cars!

That evening while we were watering flowers Colin started playing in the water and I thought it was a good chance to get some fun pictures.

After we went inside, I attempted allergy free bread - it was okay but needs some tweeking I think!

On Sunday we stayed home and got lots of things done around the house.  I did lots of cooking and made a few new things for Colin to try.  I feel so bad that he's constantly eating the same thing over and over.  I will be posting more about the recipes in coming days/weeks, but here is a preview!  I made homemade curly fries and sweet potato fries

Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Muffins

Hummus

along with granola, peanut butter oat no-bake cookies (but with sunbutter instead), and then for dinner we had Italian Chicken in the crock pot, steamed carrots and broccoli and corn on the cob. Justin said it was the best meal ever but I'm not so sure about that!

We had a great weekend together...I look forward to more weekends like this to come this summer!

I hope you all had a great weekend too!

Colin's Eczema Journey

Now that I'm about caught up on Colin's first year, I want to turn my focus to the part of our journey that I've only briefly mentioned.

At the beginning of March, when he was only a month old, we noticed that his face was starting to break out some.

We decided to take him to the doctor to make sure everything was okay.  They told us it was just baby acne and some cradle cap but that there wasn't really anything we could do for it.  As we went through March, it stayed about the same and at the end of the month it looked more like dry skin than anything else.

On April 4th, his babysitter noticed that one spot was kind of "weepy" and she thought it might be infected so she pointed it out to my mom when she picked him up that afternoon.  We were able to get a doctor appointment, so off we went again.  Yet again, they said it was "just" cradle cap and we couldn't do anything for it.  Around this time we noticed he started rubbing his face on us a lot like it was itching. By Easter his face was a lot worse and when we took him for a check-up and shots two weeks later (on a Friday), the doctor we saw was concerned.  She had us try an antibiotic cream for the weekend but his face just got worse.  We took him back again the next Monday and she had another doctor look at him also.  She thought he might have a food allergy and mentioned dairy.  I started looking at labels and realized that just because I wasn't eating cheese or drinking milk, I was still getting dairy products.  I started trying to cut all dairy out.

this was Easter Sunday

We were referred to a dermatologist by mid-May.  They confirmed that it was eczema and we started trying all sorts of things to get him cleared up.  We used various steroid creams, changed laundry detergent to All Free & Clear, began using Vanicream lotion and a free & clear soap for bath time.  I was very careful with the soaps and lotions I used for myself in case those bothered him.  They put him on an oral antibiotic as well as prednisone to try to get his skin to clear up.  (Side note - if ever giving a baby prednisone, mix it with pear juice in a bottle....he got sick otherwise!)  We were trying everything and some days he would start to clear up and other days he would look worse.  The dermatologist had told me not to worry about my diet because she didn't think that was the cause. They were absolutely wonderful and were doing all they could to help us.
constantly scratching - even in his sleep.

By the beginning of June, they were pushing for me to try formula.  I finally gave in and we bought it...$50 for one small can. I  about died over the price.  We started trying to give it to Colin and he would scream...so much so that he was starting to refuse his juice/prednisone bottle also.  At that point I made up my mind - I was going to go dairy free and see if that helped.  They had also referred us to a pediatric dermatologist.  We were trying to get into Duke University or Wake Forest. The earliest we could get into Wake Forest was August so I started searching for other options.  I looked over the entire east coast and as far west as Nashville, TN.  I saw that there were pediatric dermatologist at UNC so I had our dermatologist office try to get something set up.  We got in much quicker than expected.

He had to wear socks or mitten and his whole little body was covered.

We went to UNC on June 26th.  I had gone dairy free on June 17th and his skin was starting to clear up a tiny bit.  We met with Dr. McShane and she confirmed that it was eczema by doing a skin test.  That was awful.  They took a small chunk of skin out of his hip and put a stitch back in it.  He screamed and cried while Justin & I tried to hold it together ourselves. Dr. McShane asked us to come back in a few weeks to re-evaluate him and she also wanted us to try to see a pediatric allergist at the same time.

We came back from UNC and his skin began to clear up. Dr. McShane called and confirmed that the tests showed it was indeed eczema.  She changed some creams and was very happy to hear that he was clearing up.  Within two weeks of going dairy free, I could tell that was definitely a factor.

At the beginning of July we finally got pictures of Colin with a clear face...I can't even put into words how that felt.  I wasn't ashamed of his face, but to have a baby with soft, smooth, kissable cheeks after months of him looking pitiful....it was amazing!

At the end of July we returned to UNC and met with Dr. McShane again.  She was very pleased with his progress and said we didn't have to return again until winter.  She expected to see some flares when the weather changed.  We also saw a pediatric allergist at this visit.  She didn't want to do any testing while we were there because he was still so young.  She wanted us to return again when he was about a year old to determine exactly what he was allergic to.  Dr. McShane and the allergist both told us to start giving him some fruits and vegetables and directed us on what to start with.

A month after our first visit with clear skin!

Now, a year after we first saw a dermatologist, we still have flares and challenges but we thank God every day for helping his skin and getting us to this point.  It's been a rough road at times.  Colin has seen so many more doctors than I would have liked but through all of this I just kept saying that it could be worse.  We could get through it.

Our Weekend: Mother's Day Edition

Well, my "Our Weekend" post was a fail last week as was any other posts...sorry!  Graduation stuff consumed my life at work and when I got home I was trying to clean house for this weekend!

Friday

Friday night, I got the crazy idea to put the water table together for Colin.  We bought it on clearance last fall but left it in the box.  I wanted to have it out Sunday so I made the dumb decision to attempt that at 7:00....very close to bedtime.  Colin was so ready for a bath and bed by the end of it.  After Colin went to bed Justin & I watched the movie Fireproof after we put Colin to bed...I highly recommend it if you haven't already seen it (it's several years old now).  We are now starting the book "The Love Dare" to follow up to the movie.

Saturday

Saturday morning I was up early to get ready for graduation.  Justin dropped me off because parking is impossible and on our way we stopped at a yard sale and found a play kitchen with a box full of food!  I was so excited.  We got a great deal on it and when the lady agreed to the price she said "the Lord is good to us so go ahead and take it for that"  As I cleaned it after graduation I just kept thinking how blessed I was!  For now we are leaving it at my parents because he will get to play with it a lot more.  I'm going to continue looking at yard sales this summer for one for our house also. We moved his grill to our house in the meantime.

The girly stuff is going to our niece, Carmen, next weekend...and a tea party is in order!

While I worked graduation, Justin and Colin had an art project that I didn't know about.  They made this for me as my Mother's Day gift!

That evening we went to Mary's graduation party.  She was a graduate assistant in our office in the fall semester and finished her master's this semester.  They have 2 dogs and Colin fell in love.  Mary's mom got some really good pictures that I need to get of him with the dogs.  He's pretty hesitant about going to anyone other than us and my parents....if it meant he could see the dogs he didn't care.  Hillary took him out to see them while I finished eating and he was so content.  Maybe she's turned a corner with him and we'll have a babysitter :)

I was EXHAUSTED when we got home....but it was such a good day and the weather was gorgeous.

Sunday
I got up and put lunch in the crock pot.  I was using this recipe but with chicken so Colin could eat it. I also made cole slaw with no recipe....I was scared because I've never done that before.  It turned out good though!  I used a bag of cole slaw mix along with a spiralized zucchini and yellow squash.  I will be making that again!

We went to my parents for breakfast before church.  I had gotten the ingredients together for pancakes and Dad made them....while Colin cooked in his pajamas.  He didn't pay much attention to the kitchen the day before but immediately went to it on Sunday morning!

After church we headed back to the house to get everything ready.  Colin went with Nana and Papaw to make that easier for us.  My parents, grandma and Justin's mom came over for lunch.  The weather was gorgeous again so we set it all up on the carport to eat.  Before we ate Colin soaked himself with the water table....I think he loved it!

After lunch and a failed attempt at a nap we got a few pictures...

Mommy & Colin

Colin & Great Grandma

Colin & Grandma Patty (Justin's mom)

and then Colin was getting clingy so a 3 generation picture was in order...Mommy, Colin & Nana

We had a great day.  I am so thankful for the moms in my life and that I am a mom myself. Growing up I would change my mind about what I wanted to be constantly but one thing was consistent....I have always wanted to be a mom.  Colin brings so much joy to my life now and I am blessed beyond measure to have him in my life.

I also want to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my mom!  She has been my rock my entire life.  I always knew I could go to her with anything.  We have always been close and I was that strange teenager that preferred to be with my family.  I've not made her life easy, I know but she has already made sure I knew how much I meant to her and dad...and that I was their gift from God.  Some kids know their parents want them out when they hit 18 or 20 or whatever....to this day, I know their house is my house and if I ever need to go back I can.  When I became a mom we became even closer.  I don't know what I would do without her.  She supports me and loves me unconditionally.  She works hard to help make my life a little easier.  I couldn't ask for someone better to keep Colin....she cares for him just like I would, knows the ins and outs of his allergies, lotion regimens, medicines.  Growing up she worked hard to instill a love of reading in my life and she is doing the same with Colin...but first and foremost, a love of the Lord.  Words can't say how thankful I am for my mom.  I love you!!!!!

This week is Food Allergy Awareness week so I plan to do some posts about our journey with this finally!

Happy Monday!!
